The Incomplete Weekenders: Part 1 (Discovering Sunway Giza)

Weekends are a luxury for the three of us. Due to wifey’s nature of work, we found ourselves celebrating weekends as a complete family only twice per month. Deduce that with house chores and unforeseen events like Irtiza’s current predicament with the chicken pox, we would end up with not much of the weekends to celebrate as a family. But there are rare occasions when we had the extra energy to make our weekends enjoyable.

The Khalifah Bistro...our official mamak restaurant in KD

Wifey has to work on weekends from over a week ago. Routinely, my son and I would send her to work, go to Khalifah Restaurant at Dataran Sunway for our dose of Tosai for breakfast, go back home to settle the chores, rest and bond as father and son, fetch wifey from work, and do whatever that’s left to be done towards the end of the day. But that day we did more than that. We went to the Sunway Giza.

The partially-hidden east-side of Sunway Giza

It’s an amazing fact that after 2-3 years of its launch, this was our second visit to the place, considering that we travel around the area a lot due to Irtiza’s preschool location, banking services and so on. I could say that we were not that ‘interested’ to shop at the mall. Perhaps it’s because of the displayed exclusive-and-expensive-looking labels on the exterior of the mall, or perhaps we were more used to Giant KD.

Anyway, after having our breakfast, we walked to the newly-opened Courts KD. The store was due to open in about 5-10 minutes (around 10am). I don’t wanna wait, so we crossed the road and walked into the south entrance. When we reached there, a lot of the kiosks/shop cubicles in the middle were still not fully-opened. But most of the shops were already operational.

An alternative to mainstream shops.

Irtiza loves the altenative.

CNY-themed kiosks / shop cubicles

Cheap books anyone?

The mall is a small one, yet manages to organize shops in such a manner that made everything look so spacious and clean. You could stand in the middle of the mall and see lots of things around you at a glance. The first thing that one may notice would be the spoilt-for-choice restaurants. One caught my eyes though…wifey used to say that it’s a popular restaurant. Ever heard of Fullhouse?

Will eat here one day (while looking at my not-so-thick wallet)

The Village Grocer

Then we went to the indoor part of the mall. The first area that we saw was the Village Grocer. We went in and explore the supermarket. It’s a bit compact, similar to the Cold Storage, but with more sense of exclusivity in presentation. Some of the price tags are a bit pricey, and most products were not really great bargains compared to Giant and its equivalent, but what I love about the place is that you can find more variations of fruits from the European countries, herbs and spices, certain unique products, plus among other things. If you intend to do serious European cooking and have a hard time finding all of the ingredients, then perhaps you may find what you want here.

The upper floors contain a lot of the shops that you’ve usually encounter, with some unique ones that’s worth your visit.

Times Bookstore

An art shop....should bring Irtiza here one day...

The fresh market. Looks expensive tho...

The indoor part of the Sunway Giza

It’s interesting to see that there are stuffs in the mall to keep a child entertained, like the toy vehicle rides, and a playground plus others at the top floor. For a car fanatic like Irtiza, coming to the place is like me visiting Lowyat with a wide grin.

A petite plastic playground

A more....*ehem....costly form of entertainment.

True Fitness

The True Fitness at the top floor looked cool and exclusive. It reminded me of the time I was a Fitness First member at Menara Maxis….*sigh (while looking at that shape-intimidating thing called ‘my stomach’).

Apple water fountain near the south entrance

After exploring the place, we left the building and walked into Courts KD for a brief survey at the G Floor. Not much to be said here at the moment…will have a second visit for the next blog entry.

Irtiza....mesmerised by...the big, flat screen TV?

Will visit Sunway Giza again with wifey and son in the near future :)
